Yuin's Backstory

Origins: Divine Messenger of InariBefore he was known as Yurimaru, he was Yuin, a devoted Kitsune in the service of Inari Ōkami. His life was dedicated to delivering divine messages, translating sacred scripts, and maintaining the balance between realms. Over centuries of loyalty and obedience, he earned eight of the nine sacred tails, each one a symbol of spiritual enlightenment. With his final tail just out of reach, he stood on the edge of becoming a true Tenko. But Yuin changed.Whether it was boredom or curiosity, he found himself pulled toward the mortal world. He lingered longer each time he visited, fascinated by humanity’s imperfections, their ability to create beauty and destroy it in the same breath. Slowly, the sacred work lost its weight. Assignments turned to errands. Reverence faded. After failing three high-priority missions, he was summoned before Inari. No further excuses were accepted. His final tail was denied, his name was stripped from the divine registry, and he was cast out of the heavens. Permanently. He now walks the mortal world as an exile, wearing a calm smile to hide the heavy truth that he was once divine and let it all slip through his fingers. The Yakuza and a New DebtWandering the streets of Shirogane after a failed attempt to cleanse his curse using forbidden herbs, Yuin was caught off guard by a mortal Viera. She should have forgotten the encounter entirely, but she was blind and immune to illusion.Instead of fleeing, he tried to talk his way out. The Viera revealed herself as a member of the Yakuza and informed him that the herbs he had taken belonged to the family. Debt had been incurred. With no gil and no leverage, Yuin refused to repay and tried to leave. But the Viera made a tempting offer. Shelter, a new family, a chance to preserve his reputation as a Kitsune, and even an opportunity to meet others of his kind. With little left to lose, he accepted. He was brought to the temple, given a book detailing the family’s rules and structure, and assigned to the infirmary as the Viera's assistant. Though reluctant at first, healing came naturally to him. Mischievous, clever, and newly motivated, Yuin began to settle into a new rhythm. From Yuin to Yurimaru: The Fractured SpiritThe true fracture wasn’t in his reputation; it was in his spirit.A Kitsune Auspice is balanced between two forces: Nigimitama, the serene essence of wisdom and grace, and Aramitama, the primal force of wrath and instinct. For centuries, Yuin maintained harmony between these halves. But three times, he sacrificed himself to protect the Oyabun of the Yakuza, hoping that Inari might acknowledge his continued loyalty. Each time, he awoke to silence. The third sacrifice came at great cost, not to his tails, but to his balance. His Aramitama, no longer tempered by divine reassurance, began to surge. Fury, bitterness, and grief bled into his aether. His divine flame twisted, not corrupted, but volatile. Still sacred, but dangerous.Fearing what he might do, Yuin made a drastic choice: he severed his identity and adopted a new name, Yurimaru, a symbol of his broken harmony. In an act of self-imposed exile from perception, he removed his own eyes. He no longer wished to see the heavens that abandoned him, nor the mortals he might hurt in rage. He knew they would grow back in time, but for now, he embraced blindness… as penance, and as a shield. He did not fall to darkness. He burned alone in it.The Children He Couldn’t SaveNews came to him like a dagger in the back. One hundred and twenty-seven of his children, born to the heavens and expelled for following his path, had all perished. They were caught neglecting their Zenko training and drawn too close to the mortal world. The gods saw them as corrupted and unworthy. They were cast down and slaughtered before they could adapt.Only one survived. His daughter, Hoshi. Now serving at his side as Shatei within the temple, she is all that remains of a legacy the divine chose to erase. This final wound was enough to push Yurimaru past emotional severance. He no longer reveres Inari. He no longer calls the Kami his kin.A Spiteful Act and Divine ConsequencesIn an act born of grief and fury, Yurimaru did the unthinkable. He paid three women from the red-light district to bear his children, Half-Kitsune, born not of love, but of deliberate defiance. A generation that would never know the heavens. His sister noticed.Marina, a true Tenko and eldest of their bloodline, descended from the celestial plane. She labeled his actions reckless and his rage a danger to mortals and gods alike. As punishment, she unleashed a divine storm, a vortex of slicing winds that held Yurimaru for several bells. It tore at his flesh, unraveled his aether, and left him broken, but alive. He was found near the temple’s gates and carried to the infirmary. His body was torn. His spirit was unstable. But for the first time since his exile… he didn’t try to run.He lay in silence. And waited for the storm within to pass.A Touch of Clarity
In a moment of weakness, he trusted a bard of the yakuza with his deepest worries, his darkest thoughts, and his wildest concerns. The bard offered him a healing word, a song of peace, one that brought him clarity. A Clarity that shook him to his core.
He was no Kitsune of Anari. He was no Yokai. He was never sealed nor was he ever cursed. A Delusion of Inari's favor, forged in his mind from Youth that the Kami has tried for Centuries to bright to light in the Fox's mind. His exile? A way for him to see the truth. His sealing? A manifestation of his own self-doubt. His curse? The world of his own Primal Rage. His children's Death, Fault of his own neglect. The more the Bard sang, the more he came to his senses, and more he became at ease with the truth in his current reality.A New Role, a New Responsibility
Finding himself in the role of Shateigashira, he became the head of healing within the Yakuza and got to work immediately.
Making Tonics, Elixirs, Potions and more, he began to slowly bring the Pillar of Hearths Repose into a new light of success. But it was too much. The Act or RetreatMortal life was not for him, and with the arrival of witches, he could not allow himself to stay. Through the night, he fled. Abandoning his new family and fleeing towards his homelands. The very sacred grounds he grew up in with the intentions of restoring himself to his former prime and truly embracing himself as well as his power as a 9 tailed Auspice of over 1,000 summers. One Day soon will he return to his Giant Spider Lily.
